Beginning Reading Skills

Teaching Reading

This past year as we jumped into our home school journey we learned reading with Logic of English™.  I was terrified to teach my child how to read, and we had tried a few other programs the summer before kindergarten.  I know that sounds silly, but I didn’t know how homeschooling was going to go, so I wanted to “practice” working on things, and maybe provide a bit of a foundation.  Anyway, nothing really worked, which terrified me more.

When school started and we began using Logic of English™ Foundations A, I was impressed by how easy and fun it was.  It is a very gradual program that introduces phonics and makes learning to read enjoyable.

Below you will find some printables to use for beginning readers.

Handwriting Practice

Many children have their alphabet down by this age.  However, we have noticed in our own children that activities that seem simple really boost their confidence and encourage them to move in to more challenging activities.

As a result, we have created worksheets for your child to fill in the missing capital letters to complete the alphabet.  In addition, there is a worksheet to practice writing lowercase letters.

Additional Worksheets

Many reading programs are phonics based.  I have to admit when my daughter started kinder last year, a lot of these things were unfamiliar to me!

These worksheets are great practice to keep up those skills, and I think she enjoys being able to correct me every now and then.

Build a Story Worksheet

To help get your child’s creative juices flowing and encourage writing, we have created a few worksheets to prompt your child to write and illustrate their own story.

Games

Go Fish and Matching are childhood favorites.

The Go Fish game included in the download will help your child stay fresh on some of the multi-letter phonograms.  Each card also includes numbers and fish, so that your younger children (or adults) who are not familiar with the phonograms will have no problem jumping into the game.

Matching Games (coming soon) will require the players to match a word to a picture.

Phonogram Flashcards

Single and multi-letter phonograms.  We created a set of flashcards that you can easily print and take with you on the run.
