Phonogram Flashcards

Logic of English Phonogram Flashcards

What is a phonogram?

A phonogram is the sound or sounds that a letter or a group of letters makes.  The Logic of English™ is a phonics based system for learning to read, and like the name implies, it teaches the logic behind the interesting spelling rules we have in the English language.

For example, I grew up learning to read with sight words.  This is another common approach to reading where we learn the word “light” and are just supposed to accept that this is not a word that can be sound out.  In Logic of English, kids are taught the phonogram “igh” known as “3 letter i”.  You see this phonogram used in many high frequency words such as light, bright, high, knight, etc.

It is all very interesting, and it is amazing how much better my kindergarten was able to pick up these rules than I was.  If you are looking for a phonics based reading program for your child, I highly recommend looking into the Logic of English™ by Denis Eide.

Phonogram Flash Cards

When you buy the program you can buy the phonogram cards, which are great, especially for the games when you want something that will shuffle and deal nicely. But for flipping through we prefer these. I created these to keep up with our busy, on-the-go, in the backyard homeschool style.

We have put them on the grass and hopped across them, hid them around the yard, taken them in the lines at Disney, and flipped through them over breakfast on our camping trip. I have had to reprint them several times. I numbered them, so it’s easy to put them in the order learned if needed.

I'm Sarah! I am an unexpected home school mom, but I am loving the journey, and the time with my littles. I love creating printables for my kiddos to enrich what they are learning or to give my youngest some "school" work of his own. He appreciates simple activities that make learning fun and build his confidence. I created "Whats the HAP?" to share some of these activities with your family. Hope you enjoy them!
